WHAT'S ON YOUR COCKTAIL MENU?

(Proprietor Georgia Gietzen at her cooking group's Kentucky Derby Party last year)

On ours . . . MINT JULEPS featuring Makers Mark Mint Julep Bourbon!

136TH RUN FOR THE ROSES!  Saturday, May 1

The Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 1st and what could be better than a lazy Saturday afternoon sipping on an ice cold mint julep and watching the races.  Juleps were originally made with rum or any available liquor and became associated with horse racing in the early 1800’s when Julep cups were given out as trophys. The logical next step was to integrate the sport of Kentucky (horse racing) with the drink of Kentucky (bourbon) and the bourbon mint julep was born.

How to make a Mint Julep?  Well, you can muddle fresh mint and sugar . . .  or you can just purchase a bottle of Maker’s Mark Mint Julep and pour over ice. Crushed ice in a pewter cup is ideal but cubes in a glass work just as well. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint for the drink and a big floppy hat for yourself and you’re all set.  And keep in mind, statistics have shown that the sillier the name of the horse (remember Mine that Bird last year), the more likely he is to win, so bet big!

THE GREAT SAN SABA PECAN COMPANY

The other thing on our mind for Derby Weekend is "pecans" . . . as in "Pecan Pie"!!

Martha and Larry Newkirk,  hail from the "hill country" of Texas which is one of the top pecan-growing area's in America. The Great San Saba River Pecan Company is an award winnning line of products where everything includes pecans.  Pecan jams, pecan sauce, pecan pancake mix, pecan caramel corn and of course, their "Pecan Pie in a Jar" which is perfect for celebrating Derby Day.  We're carrying both their traditional and chocolate pecan pie in a jar.

Martha has created all their recipes in her farm kitchen and she worked hard to recreate the pecan pie she remembered her mother laboring over as she was growing up.  Super simple to make with instructions on each jar, you simply spoon out the contents in a mixing bowl, add eggs and butter (or their substitutes) and pour the mixture into a pie shell.

Stop in Friday, 1-5 and TASTE San Saba products including their pecan pie in a jar - take a jar home and celebrate the 137th Run for the Roses!
